Food for the Soul – Bid Adieu to STRESS

flower

There are some days when I take a look at my to-do list and really wonder if even half of it is doable. My knee jerk reaction is panic. My heart beats rapidly, my stomach cramps, and I start thinking about anything other than the tasks at hand. Yeah, a little procrastination happens, let’s be real. No matter how much I plan, and I’m the queen of planners and calendars, I can’t seem to avoid a momentary panic. But what good would I be or how effective can I possibly be when I am under stress? Some people can function under pressure, in fact it’s when they shine, but that’s really not beneficial for my health – think raised cortisol levels and comfort food. Shoveling spoonfuls of coconut ice cream into my mouth while wallowing in self pity.  I don’t want that.  None of us do. We all want to feel as relaxed as possible.

Chakras and Crystals

Last weekend I dedicated time to education and empowerment. I signed up for a Chakras and Crystal workshop at my yoga center (which has sadly closed down…I shall find a new home soon enough). Though I have practiced yoga for quite sometime I am not fully familiar with the chakras and how their blockages or even being overly open influence the body. I do know that these incredible energy centers help us in yogic practice to become more balanced, aligned and wholesome beings.

The chakra is a doorway. These are doorways that lead you into other dimensions. But you have to focus on them to the exclusion of everything else.”- RamaQuotes.com

Though I am open to a lot I am also a skeptic about many things. I have moments where I question everything and really wonder what the rational explanation is for it. I made the conscious decision to be open to the experience especially since I was feeling exceptionally drawn to the workshop. I am in the process of trusting the universe and opening up to receiving the messages my intuition provides. Interesting, right?

Each of the seven chakras references different dimensional planes. It is a turnstile that leads us into different dimensions. As the kundalini rises, the knowledge and powers of those dimensions will begin to come to you.”- RamaQuotes.com

So this class was not only filled with an immense positive and healing energy, it was doused in the energy of willingness to learn. I walked in and instantly felt empowered. I have always been interested in crystals. I have so many in my room with NO idea what they are for or what they could do.

I volunteered to have stones laid upon my chakras and found out areas I need to work on. How cool is that? Having these stones placed upon my body sent this cooling sensation from my toes to the crown of my head. I felt calm, safe and surrounded by love and healing. I left the workshop feeling more aware of my body than I was before. I have always know that I am sensitive to energy but now this is clearer than ever.

I am promising myself to be true to my intuition, to listen to my body and to check in with myself to find out what exactly I need.

When your mind is clear and your third eye is open, you can see and know things that are taking place thousands of miles away from you.”- RamaQuotes.com

New Year, New Goals, Fresh Start

We are just two days away from a new year. 2012 has really been a year of challenges and learning experiences. Each experience has helped me look at my life through a different lens. The overall theme and lesson of 2012: Let GO and Let God. Oh and PATIENCE! Patience is a pain in my tush. I kid you know patience is such a hard thing and letting go is just as difficult. But I am slowly learning that being optimistic and positive about life really allows the good to flow right in.

I have high hopes for 2013. I am positive that this is MY year. Why? Because I am calling upon that amazing law of attraction and attracting nothing but good things into my life. I want to start the year with positive intentions and strong affirmations as well as goals that can really bring me closer to the person I envision myself growing into. Here is my list of goals. These are not in order of importance, rather the order in which they come to me at the moment.

1. Complete the 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge. I just signed up for this challenge to encourage myself to start off on the right track. Though I eat clean, organic, healthy vegan food 99.9% of the time, I really think this will instill some sort of discipline and keep my energy and spirits lifted during the first month of the year. The challenge requires you replace one or two meals with a green smoothie. I will start off with one meal and see where that goes. My mom says I can’t lose anymore weight without the risk of looking too skinny. I’m doing this for cleansing and detoxification purposes. I will keep you updated on my progress and post recipes!

2. Maintain my physical body and continue to strengthen and tone. I have a pretty solid fitness routine but these last two weeks have made me feel like a blob. Me and cold weather are not friends but I am making it a goal to push myself to be as active as possible. I have my Zumba Exhilarate DVDs and I will be joining Planet Fitness for the sake of motivation (and to drag my brother with me to bond over weight lifting). Oh yes, I will be doing a plank a day challenge. I really need to step my game up.

3. Take time to really stop, breathe, think and then speak. I know it is good to speak your mind but how many times do you think back to what you said and thought: maybe that did not need to be said. I want to be more mindful of my thoughts, actions and the words coming out of my mouth. I want to exude positivity. Sri Sathya Sai Baba said, “Before you speak, think -Is it necessary? Is it true? Is it kind? Will it hurt anyone? Will it improve on the silence?”

4. Continue to find at LEAST one thing to be grateful for everyday.

5. Make more time for loved ones. I try my best but sometimes I get caught up in myself and forget I need them as much as they need me.

6. Cook one new dish a week. I don’t want to get rusty! I need to try new things and share these lovely concoctions with the world.

7. Get my Zumba certification

8. Find an apartment. I am PRAYING I find the right and perfect place to establish myself.

9. Meditate and do yoga more.

10. Find the light, the good and God in everyone and everything no matter how difficult.

11. Dedicate more time and energy to my nutrition education and hopefully let go of my anxiety regarding coaching my clients. I can do this!

These things may change and I will be adding more (def happens along the way) but I hope that I can stick to these goals for 2013.

Peace, love, no beef and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

P.S. What are your goals and intentions for the new year?

Finding Joy in Silence

Finding moments to be in silence has become such a treasure for me. With all the hustle and bustle of everyday life I have realized that my mind goes on a frenzy with thoughts moving a mile a minute. Though I haven’t quite figured out how to silence my mind, I have realized that sitting in silence and allowing myself to be still and serene brings me great peace as well as joy.

I wake up in the morning with a million thoughts, thinking on my to-do lists or things I may have forgotten to do. I catch myself getting lost in these thoughts and say to myself, “Hush. This morning is sacred. There is sacredness in silence.” There are 24 hours in a day, 8 of which you spend sleeping and the other 16 hours are spent working, cooking, cleaning, spending time with people. How much of that time is really dedicated to YOU? Sure, sitting in silence or even just listening to your breathing seems like another thing to-do. But it is one thing we NEED to do. At least, I need it.

When things are hectic, I am learning that instead of distracting myself with more noise and junky eating, simply pausing and breathing brings me great clarity. There is such joyful serenity in silence. When you are silent you can hear the slightest ticking of the clock in another room, you can feel your heart beating and hear birds singing. If you find yourself lost in today’s to-do list and lost in the day’s meetings, I encourage you to take a moment to breathe. If you find yourself anxious over the holiday season and submerged in dreadful holiday shopping, simply stop. Stop. Pause. Inhale. Pause. Exhale. Repeat. Our breath is sacred. Breathe out the negativity and inhale the joyful silence.

Just as it is important to nourish your body with healthy, wholesome and nutritious foods, it is important to nourish the soul. What are you doing to nourish your soul today? Even just a moment to yourself in silence can make all the difference.

You Are What You Eat (My Latest “Column” For CSL’s Monthly Newsletter)

(So this post is kind of similar to what I wrote last week on healthy eating…but you can’t get enough encouragement to lead a healthy lifestyle. Here is just a bit more of a push towards living a healthier life)

A few of the most common questions I am asked is, “how can I eat healthier? How can I lose weight and fast?” It’s as though there is a magic pill, diet or cure that can grant people their health and fitness goals. My answer is simple. Crash diets do not work and not one diet works for everyone. Dieting seems to come hand in hand with cutting out “bad foods.” However, before true results show up, a lifestyle change must occur.

If you are eating healthy just to lose a few pounds and go back to eating unhealthy then of course your body is going to react and those few pounds you’ve lost quickly increase to 5, 10 even 15 pounds gained. Your body needs consistency

You don’t need to eliminate things from your life to feel good, healthy and well. Slowly introduce fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts and healthy alternatives to your favorite snacks, meals. As you slowly introduce these things to your meals, your body will begin to feel better.

Do you take the time to actually chew your food? What is your home environment like? How are your interpersonal relationships? Take the time to not only eat slowly and consciously, become aware of your environment. Each and every aspect of your life is connected to your health. Take a few moments to breathe, stretch, walk, chew and smile. A healthy lifestyle is much more than just dieting, it is a life focused on all aspects of your health (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual).

I strongly believe that anyone can lead a healthy lifestyle. It just takes a little push along with some planning.

Peace, love & no beef,
