5 Ways to Kick Cold + Flu Season’s A** {When You’ve Done EVERYTHING + You’re FED UP}

The Awesome Autumn Cleanse (2).png

Okay seriously guys and gals, cold and flu season is here with a vengeance.

I don’t know whether me working with children OR working outside on Saturday’s at the farmer’s market is messing with my system, but homegirl is really feelin’ it. From the random 60 degree days to the re-damn-diculous 11 degree snowy, rainy shiz, my body is like HELLLOOO what is going on. Anyone else in the Northeast going through this right now?

This is the thing that pisses me off (and I mean this in the most self-loving and self-affirming way possible), I take really good care of myself.

So how in the heck do I manage to have my sinuses act the heck up, nose running, throat tickly with some serious body soreness (and I’m not talking about the kind following working out) after doing all the “right” things? I’m sure you know I’m big on not consuming sugar, gluten, I’ve drastically cut down caffeine and I am off of coffee. I supplement regularly, drink Kombucha, eat fermented things, load my body up with nourishing, delicious foods. So, WHAT DA HECK?!

I had a few moments catching myself feeling a bit disappointed or betrayed by my body. But really, my body knows exactly what it needs. And apparently, it needs lots of cozy time to make up for all the cold weather and lots of soups.

I refuse to take any over the counter stuff because let’s face it, it just masks the symptoms and I would have to do some major overhauling of my system to get it back to a loving and nourished place.

So to keep me sane and for you to hopefully share this goodness with yo fams and peeps, here are my 5 tips for kicking this cold and flu bullsh*t’s a** while giving your body some major TLC.

Moisturizing Overnight Hair Mask

Tempeh Bacon Lettuce & Tomato Sammies

Who would have thought I would post a DIY deep conditioning hair mask recipe on No Beef Here? Okay, it’s not THAT surprising. After all, the best ingredients for our hair, skin and nails (and all that jazz) are in the kitchen. I mean, seriously, you can whip up an endless combination of possibilities for hair masks, deep conditioning treatments, body scrubs, face masks. I promise you I can go on and on.

I’m a huge fan of making my own stuff. Not only does it save you a sh*t ton of money, it’s way healthier because you’re not loading your sacred temple with garbage. I mean, if you can ultimately cut down the chemical sh*t storm, I’m all for it. I feel like the stuff we put in and on our bodies should be similar. If you wouldn’t eat it, would you want that in your body (you know the chemical crap).

Bananas for Banana Bread

2015-04-01 20.16.37

Over the last few weeks or so I have found myself really drawn to self-care and self-love. I wake up slowly, move slowly, don’t force myself to adhere too strict of deadlines to keep me less anxious. I’m also treating myself to really grounding, calming foods. Yeah, that is totally a treat to me. As weird as that may sound to some, taking the conscious effort and making the time to create something is absolutely an act of self-love and self-care.

Wow, the last few weeks have really flown by in such a blur. Even with the boxes of copies of my cookbook in hand it still has not really hit me that it’s real. It’s as though I am making all of this up and I haven’t done any of this. It’s still living in my imagination. And yet, it’s all very real. I am having my book launch party next week at Reflections Yoga Studio (very fitting since my book is called, Yogi Eats) and the universe seems to scream to me: keep on carrying on baby girl. You’re on the right and perfect path. Keep doing you and just watch the beauty unfold.

I am relinquishing a bit of my control over how things show up and just letting it flow. It’s enlightening and awakening to have the opportunity to experience so much clarity at this point in my life. I mean, this time last year I was begging to leave the job I dreaded to start fresh somewhere else (and I did) because I was drastically searching for love (career-related) in a hopeless place. But it wasn’t until I got laid off from a job I really loved that I woke the eff up. My passions burst forth and voila my book was born and things feel so right.
